Juncus capillaceus Lam. APNI*

Description: Shortly rhizomatous perennial with fibrous remains of leaf sheath persistent at base. Culms terete, 5–25 cm long, 0.2–0.5 mm diam.

Leaves basal, from shorter than to longer than inflorescence, thickly canaliculate to terete, ± filiform, 0.2–0.6 mm diam.; auricles ≤ 0.5 mm long; sheath pale yellowish.

Inflorescence pseudolateral, diffuse, c. 1 cm long, 2–5(-10)-flowered; flowers solitary or loosely clustered; involucral bract 1, well-developed, 1–12 cm long, longer than inflorescence. Tepals straw-brown, with broad hyaline margins; outer tepals 2.2–3.0 mm long, longer than inner tepals. Stamens 6, shorter than outer tepals; anthers (0.2-)0.4–0.6 mm long, shorter than filaments.

Capsule generally longer than outer tepals, obovoid, obtuse, umbonate, golden brown.

Distribution and occurrence: Naturalized near Maitland, Katoomba, Sydney, Kialoa and Orange. Native of S Amer.
