Description: Tufted or tussock-forming perennials to c. 1.5 m tall.

Culms ribbed, glabrous, branched; nodes numerous, glabrous. Sheaths loose around culm, usually shorter than internode, ribbed, minutely scabrid or warty, with sparse tubercle-based hairs to 1 mm long or glabrous; margins scattered with fine hairs to 1 mm long; ligule membranous, 1–2 mm long, truncate, erose; blade, 5–20 cm long, to 0.5 cm wide, ribbed, minutely scabrous, abaxial surface pilose with sparse fine hairs c. 0.5 mm long, adaxial surface warty, glabrous or with sparse fine hairs c. 0.5 mm long.

Inflorescence of racemes on a central axis, 20–50 cm long, axils glabrous; racemes one-sided, 5–13 cm long, spikelets overlapping, rachis scabrous.

Spikelets 4–6 mm long, 4–6 florets, pedicels c.1 mm long. Lower glume elliptic, c. 1mm long, acute, 1-keeled, keel scabrous; upper glume oblong, c. 2 mm long, retuse or obtuse, 1-keeled. Lemmas oblanceolate, 1.5–2.5 mm long, retuse, 3-nerved, lateral nerve to margin silky with hairs c. 0.2 mm long, 1-keeled; palea narrow, slightly shorter than lemma, 2-keeled, keel to margin silky with hairs to 0.3 mm long.
