Lilaea scilloides (Poir.) Hauman APNI*

Description: Glabrous emergent annual.

Leaves with sheath margins membranous; ligule membranous, 1–2.5 mm long, acute to obtuse; blade cylindrical below, flattened above, to 60 cm long, but mostly < 30 c. and 8 mm wide.

Basal female flowers with a sessile carpel terminating in a style to 35 cm long arising laterally and at rightangles to the top of the carpel, terminating in an expanded papillate stigma. Pedunculate spike to 2 cm long with flowers arranged all around the axis. The bract-like segments c. 1.5 mm long, falling with the anther.

Fruit of basal female flowers 6–14 mm long, flattened, with longitudinal ridges, and hooks or horns at the summit; fruit of inflorescence flowers 3–7 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, flattened, with longitudinal ridges and undulate lateral wings.


Distribution and occurrence: in drains, temporary pools and swamps. Native of N & S Amer.
