Description: Glabrous herb with branched stems ascending or floating procumbent, rooting freely at the nodes.

Leaves opposite, broad-elliptic to ± ovate, mostly 1–6 cm long, 4–23 mm wide, base tapering; petiole 5–25 mm long.

Flowers axillary, usually paired, bracteoles minute or absent. Sepals 4, triangular. Petals absent. Stamens 4.

Fruit oblong, 4-angled, 2–5 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, readily dehiscent; seeds in each loculus in several rows, free.


Flowering: summer and autumn.

Distribution and occurrence: Naturalised along river banks of the upper Murray R. Native of N Hemisphere and Africa
