Description: Perennial aquatic herb; stems usually 1.5–2 mm diam., rooting mainly at the base.

Submerged leaves whorled; emergent leaves in whorls of 4 or 5, ovate, usually 5–8 mm long, 3–4 mm wide, entire or with a few short teeth towards apex, green to purplish.

Plants monoecious; male and female flowers on the same shoot, solitary in the axils. Male flowers sessile; sepals green, triangular; petals green, usually tinted reddish purple, 3–3.5 mm long. Female flowers sessile; sepals absent; petals vestigial, caducous; stigmas not fimbriate, ± inflated, dark red. Mericarps ovoid, usually 2–2.5 mm long, yellowish brown, rounded, smooth to minutely punctate.
