Oenothera drummondii Hook. APNI*

Description: Perennial herb to c. 60 cm high with basal rosette and strong taproot, densely hairy, giving a grey-green appearance; stem erect, with prostrate or ascending lateral stems.

Basal leaves narrow-oblanceolate, 6–15 cm long, 10–15 mm wide, often shallowly lobed, apex obtuse to acute, petiole c. 10 mm long; cauline leaves usually obovate to oblanceolate, usually 2–5 cm long, 5–20 mm wide, margins entire or shallowly toothed, ± sessile.

Flowers in upper leaf axils. Hypanthium 2–4 cm long. Sepals 20–30 mm long. Petals 25–35 mm long, yellow becoming orange with age.

Fruit cylindrical, 30–50 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, densely hairy.


Flowering: spring–autumn.

Distribution and occurrence: Naturalized, especially on coastal sand; chiefly north from Sydney. Native of N Amer.
