Description: Erect annual or biennial herb to c. 100 cm high, with basal rosette.

Stem simple or branched with curved lateral stems.

Basal leaves oblanceolate, mostly 10–15 cm long, 5–10 mm wide, with conspicuous midrib, base often attenuate, sessile; cauline leaves lanceolate, 3–8.5 cm long, 3–12 mm wide, margins shallowly toothed, apex acute, sessile. Flowers in upper bract-like leaf axils. Hypanthium 2–4.5 cm long. Sepals to c. 15 mm long. Petals 15–30 mm long, yellow, sometimes red at the base, becoming reddish with age.

Fruit ± cylindrical, broader in the upper part, 3–4 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, sparsely villous.

Flowering: all year.

Distribution and occurrence: Cultivated, sometimes naturalized in disturbed sites. Native of Chile and Argentina.
