Panicum paludosum Roxb. APNI*

Description: Stout aquatic perennial with spongy stems floating on water and to 1.5 m high; stems to 8 mm diam., compressible.

Leaves with sheath somewhat inflated; ligule membranous at the base, divided upwards into cilia, c. 2–3 mm long; blade 5–20 mm wide.

Panicle erect or slightly spreading, 10–23 cm long. Spikelets glabrous, 3.5–4.5 mm long, acuminate. Lower glume 20–35% the length of the spikelet, truncate or with a short, median, acute or obtuse point, 1–3-nerved; upper the shape and size of the spikelet, 7–9-nerved. Lower lemma sterile, similar and subequal to the upper glume, 9-nerved, palea hyaline, c.75% the length of the lemma, sometimes absent. Upper lemma c. 2.5–2.75 mm long, c. 75% the length of the spikelet, finely striolate, obscurely 5-nerved.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in still and slowly flowing water; north from Coffs Harbour.
