Description: Erect rhizomatous and stoloniferous perennial, to c. 1 m tall; nodes brown, bearded; sheaths hispid, with reflexed hairs; ligule a fringe of hairs 1.5–2.5 mm long; blade convolute, 0.6–5 mm wide; surface smooth.

Inflorescence paniculate, exserted, contracted, linear, 10.5–29 cm long; primary branches adpressed, 6.5–11 cm long, bearing 8–40 fertile spikelets almost to base. Spikelets 4.5–8 mm long, 2-flowered, with the upper floret fertile, lower floret male. Glumes similar; lower ovate or obovate, 4–5 mm long, 66–75% of length of spikelet, 5–9-nerved, villous, acute; upper glume ovate, 4–5 mm long, 100% of spiekelte length, 9–12-nerved, villous, obtuse. Sterile lemma similar to upper glume, ovate, 4.2–5 mm long, 100% of spikelete length, 9–10-nerved, villous, obtuse, muticoues. Fertile lemma obloing, forsally compressed, 4–4.3 mml ong, indurate, pallid, smooth; margins involute, pilose, hairy below; apex obtuse, muticous; palea involute, indurate.

Distribution and occurrence: Naturalised on coastal sand dunes just north of Newcastle.
