Schoenus scabripes Benth. APNI*

Description: Perennial with short, stout rhizome. Culms erect, rigid, ± terete, grooved, smooth, 1- or 2-noded, 60–130 (rarely to 200) cm long, 1.5–2.3 mm diam.

Leaves with blade to 0.2 cm long; sheath partly yellow-brown, partly red-brown, ± smooth, shining; mouth sparsely ciliate to glabrous; ligule present.

Inflorescence erect, 7–25 cm long, with spikelets loosely clustered at 2 or 3 distant nodes; lowest involucral bract to 0.3 cm long. Spikelets narrow-ovate, acute, 1- or 2-flowered, 12–21 mm long. Glumes 6–8, lowest 4–6 empty, narrow-ovate, long-acute, obtusely mucronate, straw-coloured to dark blackish brown with straw-coloured margins, glistening, with margins glabrous or sparsely ciliate at apex; fertile glumes 12–15 mm long. Bristles absent or minute.Stamens 3; anthers 5.7–6.2 mm long.

Nut trigonous, cylindrical with long angular stipe, c. 5.5 mm long (including stipe), 1.3–1.4 mm diam., 3-ribbed, transversely wrinkled, glabrous, dull, straw-coloured to red-brown.

Flowering: Spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: North from Jervis Bay. Very scattered distribution - possibly overlooked in other swampy locations on the NC and SC.

Grows in wet heath in sandy soils.
