Senecio glossanthus (Sond.) Belcher APNI*

Description: Erect ephemeral herb, mostly 8–30 cm high, sparsely hairy, unbranched in small plants otherwise few-branched except in the inflorescence.

Leaves lanceolate to broad-lanceolate, usually 1–4 cm long and 3–10 mm wide, rarely to 10 cm long and 25 mm wide, margins entire, irregularly toothed or with 1–6 irregular lobes, lamina sparsely hairy, base tapered or ± stem-clasping and auriculate.

Inflorescence corymbose; heads narrow-campanulate, 3–3.5 mm diam., glabrous; involucral bracts usually 7–9, 4.5–5.5 mm long; bracteoles 2 or 3. Ray florets 4–8; ligules 1–2 mm long, sometimes lacking.

Achenes dimorphic; ray-achenes c. 3 mm long, green, densely hairy with long white spreading hairs; disc-achenes c. 2 mm long, reddish brown, with short white appressed hairs; pappus 4–5 mm long.

Flowering: mainly winter.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in various situations following temporarily wet periods; inland regions, west from West Wyalong district.

Grows in seasonally wet areas, on gilgai plains and clay pans, on clay, clayey sand, or sand over granite, laterilte or limestone, in shrubland and low woodland.
NSW subdivisions: CWS, NWP, SWP, NFWP, SFWP
