Senecio pterophorus DC. APNI*

Description: Erect shrub, mostly 80–150 cm high, much-branched, cobwebby to ± glabrous.

Leaves lanceolate to narrow-elliptic, usually 5–10 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, margins regularly or irregularly toothed or rarely narrow and entire, upper surface green and scabrous, lower surface whitish and cobwebby, base tapered and petiole-like, decurrent on stem and ± auriculate.

Inflorescence corymbose, many-headed; heads campanulate, 4–4.5 mm diam., ± glabrous to sparsely cobwebby; involucral bracts 18–22, 4–5 mm long; bracteoles 12–18. Ray florets 9–13; ligules 4–6 mm long.

Achenes 1.5–2 mm long, brownish; pappus c. 5 mm long.

Distribution and occurrence: Cultivated, rarely naturalized in western districts of Sydney to the lower Blue Mountains. Native of South Africa.
