Description: Perennial herb 30–90 cm high; tufts 0.5–20 c. across at base.

Leaves 2–12 mm wide.

Inflorescence with 2 or 3 major branches and to 7 minor branches; lower bracts leaf-like, upper subulate. Tepals 8–13 mm long, 3–7-veined, deep blue to white or pale yellow. Anthers 2–4 mm long; filaments 3.5–5.5 mm long. Style 2.8–5.5 mm long.

Capsule ± obovoid, triquetrous above, 4–10 mm long, 1.8–4.5 mm diam.; seeds 2.5–3.5 mm long, smooth.

Distribution and occurrence: Widespread and variable, apparently hybridizing with the other 2 species. White or yellow flowers are most common at higher altitudes.
