Cycads in the Caribbean

The most notable cycad in the Caribbean is without doubt the endemic, endangered, monotypic Microcycas from western Cuba, although it is very closely allied with Zamia. Zamia in the Caribbean (and south-eastern USA) has presented problems and caused controversy with botanists for many years, with differing views accepting between one and 23 species. Populations on different islands are often slightly different, making species definition difficult. Six species are generally accepted today.
