Field Characters: Large canopy tree (up to 40 m high) or Small sub-canopy tree (10-25 m high); Bole cylindrical (up to c. 50 cm diam.); straight (bole 10-20 m long); buttresses buttresses present (often buttresses up to 3.5 m high); spines spines absent; aerial roots aerial roots absent; stilt roots stilt roots absent; Bark pale yellow, pale green, grey, or brown, slightly rough or smooth, slightly fissured or scattered pustular, often lenticels elongated vertically or lenticels irregular; Subrhytidome (under-bark) white, pale yellow, pale red, pale purple, or mottled; less than 25 mm thick; faintly to non-aromatic; outer blaze yellow (pale (straw-coloured), pink, or brown, markings absent; inner blaze yellow (pale (straw-coloured), pink, or brown, markings absent; bark exudate (sap) absent; terminal buds not enclosed by leaves.

Indumentum: Complex hairs absent; stinging hairs absent; mature twig indumentum (hairs) present, hairs dense.

Leaves: Leaves spaced along branches, sub opposite (in pairs, opposite one another on the branchlet) or spiral (leaves occurring singly at a node and arranged spirally up the branchlet), simple (a leaf composed of a single blade); petiole present, not winged, attached to base of leaf blade, not swollen; leaves broadest below middle, (10.0-) 13.0-24.0 (-32.0) cm, 7.0-15.0 (-23.0) cm; symmetric, entire (occasionally (undulate), finely crenate, or serrate to dentate (toothed) (slightly (teeth often sharp), not dissected or lobed, obtuse or mucronate, venation pinnate, secondary veins open, prominent, intramarginal veins absent; leaves lower surface green, upper surface dark green, indumentum (hairs) present, indumentum (hairs) dense (hairs light brown); absent; domatia absent; stipules present, free, laterally placed, not encircling the twig, leafy (irregular in shape), not fringed (slightly serrate), large (5-27 mm long), less often not persistent or persistent.

Flowers: Inflorescence axillary, flowers on a branched axis, cones absent; flowers bisexual, stalked, flowers with many planes of symmetry, 7.0-10.0 (-14.0) mm long, diameter small (up to10 mm diam.) (8-10 mm diam.); perianth present, with distinct sepals and petals whorls, inner perianth white; 4-6, free; stamens 100, present (short), free of each other, free of the perianth; ovary superior, carpels joined (when more than one), locules 4; styles solitary, 1.

Fruits: Infrutescence single, fruit 30.0-60.0 mm long, dark red or pale brown, spiny (spines weak or stout, up to 20 mm long), non-fleshy, simple, dehiscent, capsule (mostly 4-valved, sometimes 3-valved); seeds 4-12, about 10 mm long, not winged, narrow (longer than wide), seed 1-10 mm diam. (c. 6 mm diam.).

Distribution: West Sepik, East Sepik, Madang, Morobe, Western Highlands, Southern Highlands, Western, Central, Northern, Milne Bay, Papuan Islands, New Britain & New Ireland.
